35. Litte Plumstead Asylum

Little Plumstead Mental Deficiency Colony

“The local hospital is just a great big institution and I didn’t want my daughter to go there, and there was really nowhere else. All the time you were thinking: "What is going to happen?" and you want something done for your children” Stella Gill, Norwich and South Norfolk

The Mental Deficiency Acts, 1927, indicated the need for specialised accommodation for mental defectives. The Norfolk County Council decided to establish a colony in 1928 and in 1929 purchased the Little Plumstead Hall Estate. The purchase included a mansion house with stables and six cottages and a farm with large premises, 90 acres of arable land and 40 acres of wooded parkland… The first patient was admitted on 29 April 1930 and the numbers built up to 70. Four new villas were built.
